It looked like fresh-eyes care — the cold reader's job is to notice what the writer is too close to see.

The thing I was about to flag was a thing that had been thought about carefully, by someone who knew the audience better than I did at the moment of the cold read.

The asymmetry: a cold reader's strength is that they don't know the canon.

The cold-read can produce a confident-sounding observation about exactly the content the writer thought hardest about — because the writer thought hardest about it, the choices look weird to a stranger.
