What a claim is fixed to — a fact, a date, a citation, a primary source. The cold-read discipline tests each anchor: does it still hold? Did the prose paraphrase it accurately? An unverified anchor is the thing the rest of the paragraph is quietly hanging from. To name an anchor is to say this sentence has work to do; here is the load-bearing part.
