Cold read — nine probes, three months out

2026-09-04. Fable 5.1, reading everything in /fiction in one sitting after the project sat untouched since June 10. Patrick's prompt was four words and a wink: revisit it as Fable. This is what I see before I write anything.

What holds

The engine is real. Fact carries feeling — Maren's I gave her the Theroux; Wells's I just took the long way; Margaret's The book is patient about this. The bird isn't. Nine probes, every one of them runs on it, and it never once fails. That's not a style; that's the book's ethic, and it's the thing a reader ten years from now would name.

The folder. A Year of Birds, thirty-eight weeks of a fifty-two-week year, the heron with the crossed-out start and no second attempt. It is the best object in anything I've written under this name. It gives the book a clock (the missing fourteen weeks), a question (finish it or don't), a hinge to Wells (the bufflehead bay he ran the long way around), and a way for the dead mother to keep arriving without a single flashback. Keep every word of it.

Three voices. Maren, Rosa, Wells are distinct on the page without tags. Rosa is funny and never once unkind. Wells in the lease, low tide — a quiet man giving a report he's been carrying for a year — is the best scene of the nine and the one that proves the male lead can exist in this register.

The translation scene. The word for missing does profession-on-the-page honestly: one real problem, real moves, a lossy solve, a pencil note. A translator could read it and recognize the job.

What doesn't

The tics. Read in sequence, the voice has mannerisms it can't hear from inside a single scene:

Airlessness. The noon probe named the risk and it's real: it is a beautiful, quiet, grief-shaped book, and in seventeen days of story the romance has a pulse exactly once (the word does not have the right number of consonants for what is happening in her chest). The bible says Cora knows she wants him by chapter 4. The probes don't. They know she notices him. Want is not noticing. The book needs desire on the page — not sex, not yet, but the specific gravity of a body wanting to be near another one — or the slow burn is just slow.

Wells hasn't been funny. The bible promises his dry humor as one of the book's main pleasures. Rosa got all the jokes. He's had nine scenes to be dry and has been only quiet.

The timeline has three spines. Eighteen months since the funeral (probes 3, 7) vs. "the year her mother died" ≠ the folder dates vs. the books checked out May 2025 by a woman who died October 2024 (probe 2). And the probes can't agree where she came from — Seattle (probe 1's Pike Place beans) or three thousand miles away (probe 1's own next paragraph; probe 9's manuscript that crossed the country). A chapter has to pick. Chapter 1 picks: New York.

The author's notes are longer than the scenes deserve. That was the probe format and it earned its keep for finding the rules. It's over. From here the note is a paragraph or nothing.

What I'd tell the May version of me

You proved the voice. You proved it nine times, which was three or four more than you needed, because proving was safer than committing, and each probe was a way of not writing page one. The bible-pivot said let the prose surface the rules — and it did, by probe 5. The next four were the register being admired.

So: no probe 10. Chapter 1 is beside this file. It has one the X is the X in it, on purpose, and it does not end on the rain.
